How to Find Beaver Valley Slag

Subcontractor Haulers

Beaver Valley Slag mines approximately 800,000 tons a year of air-cooled blast furnace and steel slag products, and have been operating at their present site since 1996.  They offer a wide assortment of PennDOT certified aggregate products that have been successfully used in a host of construction and manufacturing applications.  With a continual focus on product development and process improvement, it is no wonder why Beaver Valley Slag’s products seem to be appearing everywhere.  From the runways of the Pittsburgh Airport, or as an integral raw material in Portland cement and concrete manufacturing, or even in residential driveways, pipe culverts, and basements . . . our products are chosen because they perform and they last!

But how did all this slag get here?

For almost 90 years the huge J&L Steel plant in Aliquippa, PA poured its slag ladles onto the lands along the Ohio River that today are Beaver Valley Slag’s reserves.  This is now the largest slag reserve east of the Mississippi River, with an estimated 100 million tons.  Beaver Valley Slag has been mining this reserve since 1996 and providing customers the consistently high quality products that they have come to expect.
Beaver Valley Slag’s present-day operation can easily be seen from Route 51, between Monaca and Aliquippa, where a wide assortment of large off-road vehicles, crushers, screeners, and conveyors safely recycle this one time waste material into a superior aggregate product.  By closely monitoring product quality, and assuring that it conforms to all relevant PennDOT specifications, we consistently demonstrate the high performance that our customers have come to expect.

This modern and efficient operation also converts once unusable industrial slag dumps into prime industrial properties.  The community not only benefits from the business that the slag operation generates, but also from the economic development initiatives that spring up from the now available prime land.  The neighboring US Gypsum plant and Beaver County Jail both testify to this fact.

Our dedicated and professional staff is ready to serve you to meet your aggregate needs.  We employ approximately 30 people from the local community who have both an intrinsic working knowledge and attitudes fixed on providing meaningful and friendly service.  We want to demonstrate this to you with your next slag or aggregate application.

WHAT IS SLAG?

A.S.T.M. (the American Society for the Testing of Materials) defines blast furnace slag as “the non-metallic product, consisting of essentially of silicates and alumino-silicates of lime and other bases, which is developed in a molten condition simultaneously with iron in a blast furnace”.

In other words, iron and steel makers produce slag by using limestone to purify their iron-based products.  After the molten slag is separated from the iron or steel, it cools and hardens with its own unique set of properties.  Because of the high temperatures of a blast furnace, approximately 2700 degrees F, the impurities have been chemically bound.  What results is an extremely hard and resilient rock.  In addition, because gases escape from the slag as it cools, it has a porous (or vesicular) structure that makes it lighter in weight, yet extremely strong and durable.  A further benefit is that the carbon dioxide was driven out of the rock when it was calcined in the furnace, which is a strategic benefit to cement manufacturers.

Beaver Valley Slag sells both blast furnace slag products as well as steel slag products, which were produced in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF).  The steel slags are formed at lower temperatures, and are darker in color because of their higher iron concentration.  Steel slags have more limited applications, however they perform exceptionally well in surface applications, such as exposed construction access roads.
